Robotech: Live Action Movie News

ROBOTECH: Movie News!!

Some of you may be wondering just what is Robotech and why is this important enough to be the first of Cosmo's Collectibles posts? In my humble opinion Robotech was one of the best Animated Multi-Generational stories to hit the American TV screens in the mid 1980's. To be fair there was a lot of great cartoons in the 80's, but what made Robotech stand out for me was the way the story developed an progressed. The characters grew older and matured.

The series was broken up into 3 generational stories that spanned almost 50 years, "The Macross Saga", "The Robotech Masters" and "The Invid Invasion/New Generation". Recounting a future history of an earth on the brink of World War 3 in 1999 when an alien ship crashes. A short time jump to 2009 the earth is now at peace with the governments coming together united, having spent the last 10 years studying the alien technology, nicknamed "Robotech"nology, in preparation. Preparation for what? The Alien invasion of course... ok so far this seems like the normal sci-fi right? This multi-generational approach in and of itself was way out of the norm for a American kids show in 1985. However that is not the only thing that made show stand out. Up until Robotech most kids cartoons were one-shot episodes and largely focused on introducing a new character, vehicle or ship which coincidentally had a Toy counterpart. Through out the Robotech story arcs you are introduced to complex characters who are central to the story...human and alien alike and out of nowhere many of them die or are killed. Well it is a war story right and people die in war... but not on a kids cartoon.. not a central human character at least. Using the backdrop of a galactic war between the Giant Alien Zentradi and the people of Earth  the show also tackled topics of racism and bigotry. It dealt with adult relationship issues and many other topics normally taboo for a kids cartoon.

Of the 3 my favorite was the Macross Saga. The central character was Rick Hunter who was barely 18 years old when the series started. We follow Rick through a love triangle between Rick, his teenage girlfriend Lynn Minmei and Lisa Hayes who gasp is an Older woman and his Commanding Officer. We get to see Rick go from being a kid in the wrong place at the wrong time struggling to get by to his becoming a Respected leader of the Robotech Defense Force.

The original story was actually adapted by Carl Macek from several Japanese Anime's (Super Dimensional Fotress: Macross, Super Dimensional Cavalry: Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada) for Harmony Gold.  While there is a lot of arguments about which versions are better I will remain neutral. Mainly because I first became familiar with Carl Macek's Robotech Story and they hold a special place in my childhood memories, as I raced home from school hoping not to miss more than a second of that burned film crawl opening.

If you want to learn more about Robotech be sure to check out the Robotech Saga Wiki website. It is a great resource and I highly recommend it.

James Wan Set To Direct Upcoming 'Robotech' Movie

With a heavy background in the horror genre James Wan might not seem like the obvious choice to direct a Sci-Fi film but I have to say that I am excited about this development. Wan is probably best known for his writing and directorial roles on the Saw franchise as well as Insidious and The Conjuring. More recently though he has proven that he can handle the heavy fast paced action of the Fast and the Furious franchise with his turn on Furious 7. A director with the ability to balance the dramatic tension that is the basis of any good horror film against the high impact Mech Driven aerial dog fights which fans will expect is exactly what a film like Robotech will need.

In June, Ollie Barder reported via Forbes Tech  that James Wan, "has seemingly closed deals to direct both the upcoming Robotech movie as well as Aquaman."
Barder went on to say, "Of all the creative team attached to Robotech Wan is by far the most interesting. Especially as he has a real variety of films under his belt and can handle high-octane action as well. All of which will be required to bring something like Robotech to the big screen.This new development also definitely shows that Sony Pictures are serious about the property and are seeking out the necessary talent to make it work."

Variety: "Sony Takes Over ‘Robotech,’ Plans Film Franchise"

Earlier this year Variety's Brent Lang reported some big news for Robotech Fans when he published the news that Sony has taken the reigns from Warner Bros. Pictures for the live action film franchise.
As reported by Brent Lang for Variety in March;
"The studio hopes to move quickly into production on the live-action feature, with Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton (“300,” “The Immortals”) producing and Michael Gordon (“300,” “GI Joe”) writing the script.  "
